Johnson to play some of Asia’s best hockey talent

Bendigo hockey star Tracey Johnson departs for Asia on Sunday to represent Australia Country for the fifth time.

Johnson will be one of the more experienced members of the squad that will compete in Singapore and Malaysia.

"It's a new-look team this year with a different coaching staff, so it's pretty exciting to see how we go,'' Johnson said.

"We play two games against Singapower and two games against Malaysia plus some games against local club teams as well.

"The last time we played Malaysia they were ranked the 21st team in the world... it's a great opportunity to play against teams of that quality.

"They (Singapore and Malaysia are very quick and agile players and it's so hot over there. It's going to be tough."

The striker earned her place in the team on the back of some standout performances with the Victorian Country squad at last year's national titles in Townsville.

"As a team we didn't have a great tournament because we finished second-last,'' Johnson said.

Johnson's two-week tour to Asia means she'll miss the opening round of Victorian state league action with the CV Blazers.

"I'm looking forward to the season,'' Johnson said.

"We've had a good pre-season and the attitude is really positive. We have a lot of young girls in the squad this year so it will be a development year for us."
