Blazers fired up for Vic League Final

The Central Victorian Blazers women's hockey team is confident it can cause an upset in Sunday's Vic League 1 grand final in Melbourne.

The Blazers, who are making their first grand final appearance in seven years, haven't beaten the minor premier St Kilda this year.

Star striker Tracey Johnson said the young Blazers are ready to change that on Sunday.

"We've had some tight matches with them (St Kilda), but they've got the better of us,'' Johnson said.

"We had a struggle with numbers early in the season, so it's a credit to the club that our reserves team made the finals as well.

"After having challenges all year we have our full squad available on Sunday and everyone is ready for it."

After missing out on the finals last year the Blazers went into 2018 in a rebuilding mode. The development of those younger players has helped the club catapult up the ladder.

"With all the young players we have at the club we didn't put expectations on ourselves and I think that helped us,'' Johnson said.

Johnson said the Blazers have been led superbly by coach Mick Gulson and captain Courtney Waterson.

“We’ve had a great spread of good players across the board,’’ Johnson said.

“The team has really come together and played well as a team.”
